Course Objective

Course Objective
In this course, students will further enhance and develop their speaking and listening skills. By the end of the class, students will be able to do the following:

Listening:
* Listen for main ideas and details
* Predict content
* Note-taking
* Using context clues to understand what you hear

Speaking:
* Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity
* Take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts
* Present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest
* Explain a viewpoint on a topical issue
* Students will also improve their pronunciation.

Class activities include lectures, pair work, group discussion, and presentation.

Course Objective

This one-year four-skill integrated course prepares students to become more effective and confident readers. While the focus will be on academic reading and vocabulary, this class will also encourage students to discuss and write about the ideas they discovered in the readings, aiming to make them better speakers and writers of English as well. Students will engage in various activities, including discussion, group activities, and group presentations.

2021 Fall: Reflection paper

  1. The paper must be typed.
  2. The paper should be 400 to 500 words (about 1.5 to 2 pages, 1.5 spaced).
  3. Writing should use formal English, correct spelling, and punctuation.
  4. Topics may include any information covered in class, from the Six Minute English, TED Talk, your term project, to your blog writing, or your class activities.
  5. Consider the followings when writing your reflection:
    1. How do you like the Six Minute English website and TED Talk, as your language learning resources?
    2. Do you think that maintaining a blog and writing a post on weekly basis has improved your “writing fluency”?
    3. Do you think that expressing your thoughts on your blog on weekly basis has improved your “speaking fluency”?
    4. Do you think that writing what you think first before you enter the class has “increased your willingness to communicate in English in class”?
    5. Do you think it’s a good idea to create and maintain a blog as part of the English course?
    6. What’s your opinion on the course design this semester? (1) use the online resources as the major class materials (Six Minutes English) and (TED), (2) preview the course materials, look up the difficult words and post them on the blogs before class meeting, (3) share your thoughts on the issues been discussed in class.
    7. What new things have you learned? Would what you have learned to change your English learning behavior in the future?
  6. Deadline: Please submit your reflection paper to Blackboard before 12/28 at 22:00 pm(Tuesday). Please also hand in a hard copy when you come to the class on Wednesday.

重要提醒: Writing a reflection helps you find what is meaningful to you and adds value to your learning. Do not simply outline or summarize the materials we have covered. I want to know what the materials mean to you.

Course Objective

This is a one-year four-skill integrated course that prepares students to become more effective and confident readers. While the focus will be on academic reading and vocabulary, this class will also encourage students to discuss and write about the ideas they discovered in the readings, aiming to make them better speakers and writers of English as well. Students will engage in a variety of activities, including discussion, group activities, and group presentations.

Course Objective

本課程為全校非英語系大二學生所開設之通識英文必修課。大一英文著重於聽力以及閱讀的訓練(perceptive skills)。大二英文將重心轉向口說以及書寫(productive skills)。本學期學生會有大量的機會透過書寫或是口頭,整合網路優質影音網站,學生建立自我的部落格,搭配課堂活動,透過課前準備,課中討論,課後延伸作業,教師將引討學生更能自在的用英文表達看法,提升其口語以及書寫流利度。

Participation and Attendance

  1. You need to attend class and submit all classwork on time. There will be weekly listening and writing activities along with the group and individual projects. The syllabus is subject to change
  2. Preparation for the next class is required because the class will be conducted based on the assumption that students have prepared for the class. Finish listening to the assigned audio/video files before the class and bring up questions about the topic. Be in class on time.
  3. Homework must be turned in on time. No late work will be accepted.
  4. There will be quizzes and exams based on the materials discussed in and after the class. No make-up tests.
  5. You’re responsible for getting class notes and handouts, if late or absent from class. Absence from class will not be an acceptable excuse for missing assignments or tests.
  6. Please switch your mobile phone to silent mode during class time. Unless it’s used for dictionary lookup or for information searching, please don’t use your mobile phone during class time.
